MY TARGET

At the end of this activity, you will be skilful in designing process – oriented performance assessment.

MY TASK

After your observation experience you now have a deeply and principled understanding of the concepts of authentic assessment used in the classroom. You can now go through the process of designing performance assessment by the following these steps:
1.       Visit a class and identify performance-based activities.
2.       Choose one performance-based activity and study its process.
3.       Design a performance assessment plan for the activity you have chosen.
4.       Collect samples of performance-based assessment tools.
5.       Reflect on your experience.

MY TOOLS

In observing a class, take note of important observations of the performance-based activity in the classroom. Make a checklist of the important things you want to consider in your assessment planning. Use the activity form provided for you. You may use format of process-oriented assessment that you have taken in your assessment 2 class. The rubrics are part and parcel of this assessment plan.

OBSERVATION NOTES

Name of the School Observed: Isabela National High School
School Address:  San Vicente Ilagan City, Isabela
Date Visited: February 09, 2015
Grade/Year Level: Grade 9
Subject Area: T.L.E (Carpentry)

Describe in bullets the performance-base activity you observed.
-the teacher prepared a filler paste and wood.
-the teacher asked the students individually to put a filler paste on the wood.
-each student will do the activity and should make it properly.
-the student will prepare the filler paste before applying it on the wood.
-the teacher observes on the back while the students are performing.

Based on your observation, make a checklist of the important things you wish to consider in your performance-based assessment plan.

MY CHECKLIST

As a teacher I want to make sure that before conducting an assessment I would assure that I already discussed the topic well and make sure that they understood and learned a lot of things from it not only knowledge but also skills. I also want to make sure that from the things they learned from me they will be able to defend things as I ask about their work.
Another thing about this is that my performance based assessment will always come at its best because with this assessment, I will have my feedback about my students standing. My assessment should be conducted on time because I know some of students have no patient on reading back their notes. I will also assure that each student will work independently and do on their own depending upon the activity given. The assessment can also come in collaborative work.

What are the best features of my process-oriented performance assessment design?

The best feature of my process-oriented performance assessment design is that it will help my student to develop their full potentials on working independently and learned how to maximize their ideas. Another thing is that I will make sure that they are enjoying on what they are doing.

What specific conditions are necessary for a successful use of my process-oriented performance
assessment design?

The teacher must plan the assessment very well before conducting it to the students so that failure of feedback will be avoided. Secondly the teacher must prepare a rubric that is parallel to the performance and activity of the students. The teacher should give a clear direction about the activity before conducting the activity to the students.  The teacher must guide the students well while they are working so he/she can take note about the performance of is/her students.

What basic points should the user of this design consider?

The teacher should first consider the availability of resource especially the equipments and materials to be use, secondly, the authenticity and level of assessment. This would help the teacher to make his/her assessment matched in the topic. He/she should plan his assessment carefully in order to meet his target.
The teacher should consider the learning target and what specific and meaningful design he/she will use to help him/her.

ANALYSIS

1. Why do teachers need to give attention to the students’ process-oriented tasks? Why do they need to assess them?

Students performance always give us the right feedback. As they work on their activity and as we observe them this will help us to know how much ideas they learned from us and how they manipulate or use their knowledge appropriately on the given activity.
We need to assess them for us to know if they really learned or not. With the use of proper assessment this will help us to reach our students and make things clear from the things that they don’t get.

2. In what conditions can the process-oriented performance assessment be used appropriately?

We can use this design appropriately by making an activity for our students wherein direct observation is present. Were our activities will have process that is to be examined by the teacher. The teacher will stand and look on the students as they work individually or in group. It is also appropriately use if the teacher have his/her rubric to give a score on the students. The teacher should also write down the things he/she observed as the students are working.

REFLECTION

Make reflections on your feelings and thoughts about the observations made in this FS.

As a teacher we should give our students an activity that would make them realize what they are doing on the things that we are giving on them and what is the significance of it on their lives. Giving a good activity and have a positive interaction between the student and the teacher will help them both to meet their goals. In giving an assessment we should consider the practicality, availability and level of our assessment.
Direct observation on students will help us know their abilities in manipulating and answering the given activity.  We also have to be aware on who are we assessing and what are we assessing, we have to carefully plan for our assessment and make sure that we will reach our goal for our students. Have to be careful on choosing assessment design because if it is not appropriately use, we might have an error feedback on our students progress. We should know the proper assessment that is to be conducted on our students and watch or observe them well while they are trying to do the given activity. Also we have to prepare a good rubric so that we can avoid bias.

My Target
At the end of this activity, you will be informed on the principles of authentic assessment and its usefulness in the classroom.

My Task
Authentic assessment is an alternative way of assessing students’ learning to be able to use it, you must have a deep understanding of it. To help you reach your goal, do the following task:
1.       Visit a classroom and interview the teacher on his/her experiences in using authentic assessment.
2.       Describe how the teacher uses the authentic assessment.
3.       Write a reflective journal on the activity.

My Tools
For this learning activity, please document the information gathered from the interview with the teacher on authentic assessment. Write your documentation using the activity form provided for you.

MY INTERVIEW NOTES

Our resource teacher have always been giving us the information that could help us find out the best teaching strategies including the type of assessment, the proper methodologies as well as the good behaviour towards the teacher from the student and student back to the teacher.
We are lucky to observe one of the best teachers in the INHS that manage his class very well.
Mr. Limon our resource teacher said to us that in order for us to assess very well the student we should have to give clear directions and also what is our target for the student so that the students are aware of what to do and what to include. Next step is that we should present the criteria for judging in the student so that they know already how to calculate for their grades. '' There are lot of student who are complaining and comparing their grades especially if it is higher section'' he added. He also said that we should be very careful on giving grades to students.
Teacher Limon use authentic assessment wherein he allows his student to do the wood painting and wood joining. After discussing the entire topic he lets his student to bring their own material like Wood, nails, natural varnish, plywood, paint brush and wood glue. For the wood joining, he lets the students to utilize their time in making wood joints. He observes his students who are doing well and who are not interested. He checked for the work of each student who can follow the steps. He looks for the student who actually understood the topic He allows his student to open their notes and look for the procedures. After they finish their work, he check individually the student on how they arrive in that kind of project, he knows that some of the student did not do alone their project because base in his observation he saw some girls and boys who can’t follow the procedure so to make sure about his judgement he have to ask that particular student on the procedures and their answers and reasons are needed to assess them well.
He said to us that in the wood working we have to observe and check the students during their performance and do not rely alone on the product because some of the students are cheating.

Analysis
1.       What is Authentic Assessment?
Authentic assessment is a type of assessment where in we observe and look for the students performance on how they will use their knowledge with the given task. And with their product we also have to score them base from it, but before scoring them we have to ask them on how they do for us to know if they really do it alone. Base from this we can have an idea about the students progress and skills.  Of course the level of the task that you should give to your students must be complex and not simple, because that will tell you on how the students are working about their learning and with that task they will arrive into another learning.  Note that the degree of authenticity of your product and performance is greatly affect your students. Make sure that you give them the proper task that is tied with your learning target. It must also include a rubric to give a grade for each student because this will give an equal and fair scoring. This must be presented before the task starts.

2.       How was authentic assessment used? Was it used to measure learning through the product?

It is use through performing and having a tangible output. Yes, because the task that was given to them was specially design to provide a feedback to know how much they get from the teacher. And with that product he will later ask some questions about the project on how they arrive with output, base from the teachers observation he will now have a good judging.

Reflection

What are your insights and feelings about the use of authentic assessment?

Base from my resource teacher and his  strategy in teaching and assessing I can say that it is good to include real world setting and do the learner centred approach wherein we let our students to work on their own, as the adage  says 'I see and I forget, I hear and I remember, I do and I understand.' It is practically applicable in education that learning by doing could greatly affect the students knowledge, performance and behaviour. We should look for the complex activities for our students that would allow them to use their knowledge and with that activity another learning will arrive.
We have to be very observable and look for our students while performing because with that observation we see the students who cannot follow and who do cheating. We can use this observation in checking their outputs later. So for us to have a good basis we must record or write the students behaviour while they are performing.

Describe how the teacher used the authentic assessment?

The teacher lets the student to bring their own material. He let his student to work individually for him to have an accurate measurement of the learning of the students. He provides a task that is equal to all regardless of the sex of the students meaning there is no boy or girl in terms of doing the task. He also includes the time interval in doing the task. Because some of the students are lazy and some were just doing their outputs just to have a grade.

How did you feel about the teacher’s experience in the use of authentic assessment?

The use of authentic assessment was great. We should not rely alone on their quizzes because of the students are cheating with their seat mates especially if the type of sitting arrangement the boys are separated with the girls.  We must have to be very careful on giving a task without observing the. We also have to be serious in giving a task because base from my observation some students will laugh at you and will not do their task if you are playing with them all the time.  The authenticity of the task must be reliable, we should give the same task to all the students regardless of the sex and section.  My resource teacher also told me to be careful in giving a direction. Because some students are slow.  We also need to show the rubrics in public before giving them a score.

What could be the gains of the students and teachers in using authentic assessment?

For the student; aside from learning they may gain skill and good workmanship. They
May develop their potentials in terms of art because the task that was given to them by our resource teacher was wood painting. They may also gain good learning habit or good recreation. Because the teacher provide them a task that will later turn into a good and useful output.

Which part of the teacher’s use of authentic assessment do you feel like improving or revising?

For me the part of improving in the authentic assessment of the teacher is the degree of the procedure. He improves and had made a better task because he found out that his students are interest though the task is hard for them to follow. He make sure that the learning task will not be similar to the new task.
